Thanks for stopping by and checking out my website! My name is April and I'm the founder of Hooked Flames candle company.
I started Hooked Flames because I didn't want to work 8 hours of each day away from my little girl anymore. I wanted to do something at home that I enjoyed. Having previously tried candle making about 3 years ago with no success, this time, I did my research on waxes, fragrance oils, and wicks and finally figured out what I had been doing wrong. Firstly, I had not been using enough fragrance oil. I had only been using about 6%, but when it would burn there was no sent thrown into the air. I should have been using at least 10% of the fragrance oil. The wax is really just a matter of preference. I like using the Coconut Apricot wax, its soft, smooth and much more natural, which cures in about 2 to 3 days and almost always ends with a smooth topped candle. The company I purchase my wax from has wicks that work wonderfully with the wax.
It took several weeks of trial and error to figure out how to mostly perfect my candle making process. It's still not 100% perfect, but it works for me for now. I started out with beeswax, which makes some really nice candles. But I needed a double boiler to melt the beeswax, and the home we just bought needed it's kitchen taken out. So I don't have a kitchen to melt the beeswax in at the moment, but when I do have a kitchen, I plan on trying that one more time. Then I moved on to Soy wax, and then Coconut Soy wax. And finally I ended up with the Coconut Apricot wax.
Let me just say there is nothing at all wrong with Soy or Coconut Soy wax, I just like the simplicity of the Coconut Apricot wax. I don't have to melt the top of the candle because of frosted tops or bubbles in my candle. As long as the candle vessel is room temp and the wax, when poured, is about 170 degrees Fahrenheit, then I've always had good candles come out. Now the wax is extremely soft; a knife can cut it like butter. But I find that it's easier to melt that way as well.
I have tried to make wax melts, and I haven't quite figured them out yet. I know that it's the same process as making candles, but I can't use my Coconut Apricot wax because the wax is way too soft to hold up. I just have to buy a different kind of wax to try to make more. When I get that figured out I will add them to the shop as well! I am also debating on doing more sizes of candles, so if you have any sizes you'd like to see let me know! Something like 9 or 10 oz, or more if you'd like!
Thank you, again, for checking out my website and my blog! I hope you like my candles, and if there's a scent you'd like for me to try and make just shoot me a message and I will see what I can do!
Fun Fact: I originally planned on Hooked Flames being a crochet and candle making business, but I find I get very flustered with crochet, unlike with candle making. So if I get down the road and I have time to do crochet on the side of candle making, then I'll add it in. But for now it's just candles.
